Enhanced rock weathering

Think of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) as speeding up a process that nature has been doing for millions of years. Certain rocks and minerals naturally absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere, but this happens very slowly, like a sugar cube dissolving in cold water.

However, just like crushing a sugar cube so it dissolves instantly, crushing these rocks into powder dramatically increases their surface area, making them absorb CO₂ much faster. The pulverized rock material can then be spread on farmers' fields or coastal areas where it acts as a natural fertilizer while continuously pulling carbon from the air and storing it safely in the soil and oceans.

ERW allows Canada to monetize its vast mining waste while boosting agricultural productivity, and creating new revenue streams for farmers. This positions Canada as a leader in the multi-billion dollar carbon removal market using existing mining and agricultural infrastructure.
