River alkalinity enhancement

Think of River Alkalinity Enhancement (RAE) as giving local bodies of water an alka-seltzer. Just like antacids neutralize stomach acid, RAE adds naturally-occurring minerals to the water to reduce acidity and increase alkalinity.

By making the water less acidic, we enable it to safely store more of the carbon already present in the water, which in turn lets it pull additional CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. The stored carbon remains locked away for thousands of years.

RAE presents a major economic opportunity for Canada to leverage its abundant mineral resources and maritime expertise to capture billions of dollars in the emerging carbon removal market, while protecting Canada's valuable fisheries and coastal communities from ocean acidification.
